Warming Winter Comfort!
Even though our hens have started raising chicks, winter still has some cold days in stock for us. The perfect time to warm up with our Winter Warmer braaiwors, and our traditionally crafted Rookworst. It was wonderful to get the feedback on our Rookworst at last Saturday’s market, with its rich flavour and smooth juicy texture. We’re so happy to be producing and offering it here locally, with our pasture-raised pork, and getting such positive response.
Our online shop www.omweg.co.za is stocked, and we’re at the Under The Oaks Market in Swellendam this Saturday. Please find our product list attached, and all our news below – including a new order-pick-up location in Cape Town!
Thank you for being part of our journey and supporting local, regenerative farming. We hope you continue to enjoy what we raise and produce with care.
Warm greetings,
Jan & Elisabeth
From City to Soil
We’ve been kindly invited by Friends & Neighbours to share about our farming journey and what guides our approach. Everyone’s welcome - members and non-members alike - so if you'd like to hear our story, we'd love to see you there. Full details in yesterday’s Swellengram, and please RSVP by today/Thursday 24 July for catering. To rsvp, email: vivcrone@gmail.com

🥚 Pasture-Raised Eggs Are Back
We’re happy to say our egg production is seeing an early recovery from the winter dip, and we now have pasture-raised eggs available again.
These aren’t your average “free range” eggs from the supermarket. Did you know that eggs can be labelled free range if 40 hens have access to just 2x2m of grass and 2x2m of any outdoor surface? That’s far from the natural life a hen seeks.
Our hens are out all day — scratching, foraging, and feasting on grasses, insects and seeds. The variety in their diet shows in the dark yolks — a sign of nutrition you can taste.
🌳 Under the Oaks Market - This Saturday 26 July
Find us at the market for a taste of our cured meats, braaiwors (in a range of flavours), and two market-only specials:
🥓 Bacon & Eggs Special 🥚 Buy 2 packs of bacon, get 6 eggs free - to create a delightful Sunday breakfast.
We’ve loved hearing your feedback on our Smoked Bacon! It’s a labour of love:
- Cured for 6 weeks in a dry spice rub
- Cold-smoked for 6 hours
- Air-dried for 4 weeks
The result? A truly delicious and delicately smoky flavour and bacon that crisps up without watery runoff - no liquid brines here!
👨👩👧👦 Back 2 School Special: Sage & Sizzlers – 15% Off
We hope your school routine is settling in smoothly! For quick, tasty weeknight meals, enjoy 15% off when you buy both our Sage Sausages and Sizzlers - two kid-approved favourites.
🐖 Now available: our pasture-raised lard - a natural, nourishing fat for cooking.
Unlike industrial seed oils, lard is gently rendered from our healthy, pasture-raised pigs and contains no additives.
It's rich in monounsaturated fats, stable at high temperatures, and brings a delicious depth of flavour to everything from roast vegetables to grilling meats.
Lard was once a kitchen staple for good reason - and we're proud to offer it again, the traditional way. Available in 375g glass jars.
🐇 Curious About Rabbit? Here’s Why It’s Worth a Try
We now offer pasture-raised rabbit — available whole, or in convenient two-leg packs.
If you’ve never tried rabbit before, you're not alone! But most people are pleasantly surprised by how mild, tender and flavourful it is — somewhere between chicken and free-range pork.
Rabbit is one of the most sustainable meats you can eat:
- Lean and protein-rich
- Low-impact to raise
- Delicious roasted, slow-cooked, or even braaied
If you're new to it, start with our easy rabbit leg braai recipe - and keep an eye out for our local-style braised version coming soon!
